So, did you make it to Contemporary Applied Arts this summer for Nicholas Arroyave-Portela's exhibition? If you didn't, don't say we didn't tell you about it! But of course the big story is that by the end of the exhibition each of the three distinctive ceramic vessels Nicholas had created for us to auction were all sold to the highest bidders, raising a £4,800 donation towards DLA and our sponsored project of the building of a primary school for the children of Ximiri in the Chirripó Indigenous Reserve in Costa Rica through Raleigh International. As you may have noticed, exciting times are afoot for the Discovering Latin America Visual Arts team. We have been working feverishly over the past couple of months to bring together our key event for 2010 and the team’ first since Fernando Botero’s fantastic gala evening in March 2009.

This was one little boy’s reaction to Brasilian artist Maria Nepomuceno’s sculpture-installations during my visit to her recently opened exhibit at north London’s Victoria Miro gallery. The adults in the room (including myself) were moving around the intriguing rope and straw sculptures with wide-eyed wonder, but this boy got straight to the point, getting as close as he dared to one of the suspended, flower-like openings and repeatedly shouting into it, “Hello! Hello!”
