By Tom Chalk

DirectorThe acclaimed Argentine Director will be with us during the festival and a retrospective of three films will be screening: ‘Empty Nest'- El nido vacío (2008), ‘Waiting for the Messiah '- Esperando al Mesías (2000), and ‘Brothers & Sisters'- Dos hermanos (2010)

The 37 year old Argentinean born film director, writer and producer Daniel Burman will make an appearance at the Discovering Latin America Film Festival in London. Burman is commonly known for his loose trilogy of films, ‘Esperando al Mesías' (2000), ‘El Abrazo Partido' (2004), and ‘Derecho de Familia' (2006), which were all written and directed by Burman, he also co-produced the popular 2004 film ‘The Motorcycle Diaries'. Burman is also a co-founder of The Academy of Argentine Cinema as well as co-owning his own production company BD Cine. The three films previously mentioned can be described as a loose trilogy due to the many similarities and recurrences such as the lead characters all being played by Daniel Hendler and the lead character having the same name in all films, ‘Ariel'. There are also re-appearances from the same actors, some playing the same role.

Burman's films have been featured in many film festivals around the world. ‘El abrazo partido' (2003) took the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, as well as best actor for Hendler. When asked to describe his directing style by Brian Brooks for ‘IndieWIRE' he says;

"I don't have goals when I make a film, except to create as faithfully as possible the story I wanted to tell, and that the sensations that provoked me to tell the story are also caused when reading the script."

He has claimed many awards throughout the world, including the Best Film Award at the Bangkok Film Festival in 2004 for El ‘Abrazo partido', Best Director and Best Film at the Lleida Latin-American Film Festival in 2004 also for ‘Abrazo partido' and he took home a NHK Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001 for ‘Every Stewardess Goes to Heaven'

His most recent project has been ‘Dos Hermanos', translation, ‘Brothers & Sisters' which he wrote, produced and directed and was completed this year and will make an appearance at the Chicago Film Festival. The film is a graceful portrait of two idiosyncratic siblings who, after their elderly mother's death, find themselves forced to confront the fissures in their relationship, with amusing and touching results.
