Book: Arráncame la vida , 1985 by Ángeles Mastretta
Mastetta is one of the most outstanding writers of new feminist Mexican literature. "Arráncame la vida" is set in the town of Puebla, Mexico, where a young girl recounts her childhood and eventual marriage to a general of the Mexican revolution. Commencing in 1930, under the rule of various warlords and dictators, it takes the reader through a journey of 25 years. In a haunting novel of post-revolutionary Mexico, Catalina, a carefree young woman marries at the age of 15 to General Andres Ascencio, about 20 years older than her, having no idea of what marriage would bring. Although the novel is fiction, the whole history is true to the era, with abundant references to real events. A film has been made based on the novel and won various international awards including Best Art Direction at the Ariel awards in Mexico in 2009.
