Rhythms Bicentenary of Latin American Independence Festival
Rhythms Results
On Saturday 14th August, Rhythms hosted their biggest event of the year so far at Rich Mix. The Rhythms team organised this event in support of War on Want in Guatemala, the project that we support aims to offer a better life for female sweatshop workers and to improve the living conditions and the livelihoods of female garment workers by educating, building their capacities and empowering these workers to exercise their rights. Also, enabling them to defend their rights and face policy makers, employers and multinational retailers.
The project aims to review occupational and health labour legislation, provide legal and medical advice in case of work accidents and train women workers in labour rights workshops. It will directly benefit 6000 women workers and on a secondary basis 130, 000 people.
We are glad to announce that the event was a success and the Rhythms team, thanks to your participation, raised £1400! Well done team!
The Event
A day long marathon of musical acts and workshops from around Latin America, a cacophony of sounds and beats, all with the same purpose - to celebrate the musical diversity of the continent, as well as the bicentenary of Latin American Independence. From Peruvian puppeteers to traditional dances from the Bolivian Andes, from sensual cumbia beats to sultry Argentine tango, there was something for everyone. One particular highlight of the afternoon was a workshop given by Ian Marsell from Mexicolor, who specialises in pre-Hispanic and Aztec instruments. Ian managed to captivate all members of the audience with his fascinating and witty explanations of the various musical objects. The headline act for the evening, Reverso, an 8-piece band made up of 3 Ecuadorian brothers and 5 British musicians blended Latin rhythms with rock, creating a sound that simply confirms what I have always believed - the mixing of cultures always produces the most melodious of results! The day was a great success and it was all down to the hard work and commitment of all the volunteers involved. Well done!
