Even in the build up to CASA 08 we've been trying to meet our aim of creating opportunities for Latin American artists both in Latin America and the UK. As a result, we decided to set up an award scheme, with the prizes going by the name of Premio CASA. The aim of the awards is to bring to the fore new Latin American artists and to give them the chance to shine both in the UK and in the own countries. Where possible, we do so by combining forces with Latin American institutions to provide the best possible opportunities for the artists in question.
This year we have awarded 3 Premio CASA awards. The winners are:
Venezuelan new writing competition: Roberto Azuaje
In association with the Teatro San Martin, we awarded a Premio CASA to Roberto Azuaje for his play Siete Grados de Entropia Tropical. Siete Grados will be performed at CASA Festival in London this September and then presented at the Teatro San Martin, Venezuela's premier new writing theatre, as part of their Spring Season 2009. In second place for the award, came Lupe Gehrenback with Gregor McGregor and in third place came Jose Antonio Barrios for his play El Sitio.
Puerto Rican playwriting competition: Javierantonio Gonzales
Javierantonio Gonzales won a Premio CASA for his play Barceloneta, de noche. Barceloneta, de noche will also be performed at CASA 08. We are in contact with a number of theatres in San Juan to secure its premiere in Puerto Rico in 2009.
Graphic design competition: José Alberto Juárez Granados (Mexico)
In association with the Academia ULSA, José Alberto Juárez Granados was awarded a Premio CASA for his graphic design work on CASA 08.
