Promujer® (Programs for Women) is a non-profit international development organization whose mission is to help women lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Promujer® provides training and small loans so women can initiate or improve small businesses and increase their income. The organization’s aim is to empower women to develop their business and leadership skills.
Promujer® Nicaragua began operations in poor neighborhoods in the departments of Leon and Chinandega and in 1999 expanded to the departments of Managua and Masaya. Promujer® Nicaragua currently offers: i) Financial Services: small loans through communal banking to strengthen women’s businesses, thus raising their income and savings, and ii) Non-Financial Services: training on basic business skills, sexual and reproductive health education, as well as awareness building campaigns focused on gender and self-esteem.
The money raised by Discovering Latin America will fund:
- training for women and local health providers on sexual and reproductive health
- the provision of 700 cervical cancer examinations and 1200 gynecological consultations
- awareness building activities on domestic violence
- the establishment of alliances with health and legal services organizations
