DLA Film Festival’s Highlights

The anticipation pulsing through the Odeon foray was palpable when the 9th DLA Film Festival opening Gala night finally arrived, Thursday 18th November.It was a brand new year and expectations were high. The turnout of DLA volunteers, supporters, and film goers to watch Roberto Sneider's ‘Tear This Heart Out/Arráncame La Vida' (2008) in Covent Garden was impressive; not to mention the presence of ambassadors and cultural attachés from the Brazilian, Mexican, Argentinean, and Salvadorian embassies.

DLAFF GUEST: Daniel Burman

Burman's films have been featured in many film festivals around the world. ‘El abrazo partido’ (2003) took the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, as well as best actor for Hendler. When asked to describe his directing style by Brian Brooks for ‘IndieWIRE’ he says; "I don't have goals when I make a film, except to create as faithfully as possible the story I wanted to tell, and that the sensations that provoked me to tell the story are also caused when reading the script."

LOS BASTARDOS

Amat Escalante's 'Los Bastardos' (2008), which I had the pleasure of seeing at the Tate Modern in December 2009, fits into the existential ‘buddy narrative’ of films and plays like ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead’ and Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot’. The long opening shot is of a desolate urban landscape on the outskirts of Los Angeles, and shows two wandering figures in the far background.
