Film Festival Charity

Every year, Discovering Latin America volunteers participate in the selection of the charity which the Film Festival will support. This year’s charity is Kiya Survivors, a UK and Peruvian registered charity, working to support local children and young people with special needs.

Kiya Survivors

Many of the children and young people supported by Kiya Survivors live in poverty. Many have been abused by their own families, often due to a lack of understanding and education, and some have been abandoned.

In many areas of Peru children with special needs are seen as a curse of God. One of Kiya Survivors’ main objectives is to give these children and young people a voice and encourage families and communities to understand that those born ‘different’ are a gift, not a curse!

This year, the Film Festival aims to raise £5,000 to pay for the ongoing costs of Kiya Survivors project in Chinchero, The Pasitos Centre. This project focuses its efforts on the community of Chinchero located in the High Andes of Peru. The project will provide: physiotherapy, speech therapy, and support from social workers and psychologists for both the children and their families who are living with difficult situations at home.

By providing love, education, support and therapy Kiya Survivors aims to make these vulnerable people’s lives better.

Remember that when you buy a ticket for one of our films, you are directly contributing towards making a positive difference in the lives of these Peruvian children.  Click here for more details of Kiya Survivors.

See you at the movies!
