DANZAK
Gabriela Yepes, 2008, 19'
Peru

Introduced by Jose Navarro this short film is also part of the Peruvian Scissor Dance theme of the day. The film tells the story of a young girl named Nina. Nina lives in the Peruvian mountains with her mother and dying father. He is a master in an ancient Peruvian style of dance, in which he trains his daughter.  Not yet ready to mourn, Nina grasps hold of what her father has taught her. A powerful short set against a memorising mix of tradition and modernity.

Samba de Quadra
Gustavo Mello & Luiz Ferraz, 2008, 13'
Brazil

Samba de Quadra tries to rescue the verses of provincial sambas. The film is a sensory experience, rich in detail, image and sound. The provincial samba or ‘caipira' is not folklore, but the expression through which popular artists maintain dialogue with a wider audience.
